The process

Lot

A division of a larger contract into parts that suppliers can bid for separately.

Buyers split contracts into lots — by geography, service line or value — so smaller and specialist suppliers can bid for the parts they can deliver rather than the whole.

Lots are a deliberate way of opening up contracts to SMEs, so check whether you can compete strongly for a single lot even if the whole contract is out of reach.
